Business in MINERALS sector

Small or medium sized business in Minerals sector offers many opportunities in Pakistan. But it is important that those who want to select & pursue such business should have some knowledge, experience and most importantly passion for the Minerals sector. Otherwise, the probability for failure may be high.

Below are some of the selected businesses in livestock sector.  SMEDA has also made very good pre-feasibility studies on this sector.

Below are the summarized versions of the pre-feasibility reports by SMEDA on Business in minerals sector for you to get an idea before you download the full version.

1 - Chromite Beneficiation Plant [Mar-2012]

Region: Balochistan
Investment Size: PKR Between 1-2 Million

This project is related to setting up a Chromite Beneficiation Plant to enrich the Chromite content of the ores, liberate them from unwanted rock material and other minerals and eventually separate the final product into uniform grain sizes. In other words, the purpose of beneficiation is to render the ore physically and chemically suitable for further treatment.

2 - Plaster of Paris Plant [Apr-2009]

Region: Balochistan
Investment Size: PKR Between 1-2 Million

The plant would process raw Gypsum acquired from NWFP and process it to produce Plaster of Paris that is being utilized in the construction Industry for wall fillings (for paint), roof designs, Ceiling & corner boarders, wall plaster, design making and other construction etc. The project would not only focus the construction industry and demand for innovative plaster of Paris designs & other utilities for housing & offices within Quetta city but can also trigger other parts of the province. Once the plant starts, it could supply Plaster of Paris and its products of various designs addressing to the customized consumer needs & choices, hence prove its versatility & innovation. The total project investment is Rs. 7.74 millions with a Project Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 26% against the Capital Cost (WACC) of 13%. The total project investment would be paid back in approximately 4.49 years.

3 - Salt Products [Jun-2012]

Region: Punjab
Investment Size: PKR Between 10-20 Million

The project will be producing rock salt crystal products from highest quality of crystallized salt rocks. The rock salt crystal products discussed in this pre-feasibility include; - salt lamps, salt soaps, salt candle stands, salt tiles and other decoration pieces including rabbits, camels and cats etc. This pre-feasibility is however mainly focusing on the Salt lamp manufacturing. A salt lamp is simply a chunk of mined salt that has been hollowed out to allow room for a light bulb or tiny candle. The light glows through the medium of the salt crystal, which can range in color from a dark salmon pink to a pale orange. Salt crystals for salt lamps are mined in Russia and central Europe as well as in the Himalayas. Salt lamps make attractive accent lights. Their main attraction, however, is that the heating of the salt causes the crystal to release negative ions (often called simply 'ions'). Negative ions have long been considered healthy; the sea air, mountain air and the air around swiftly running water is high in negative ions. Indoor air, recirculated air, and air around electronic equipment is very low in negative ions. Many office workers who suffer health complaints around fluorescent lighting and computer monitors report considerably less fatigue and headaches if the concentration of negative ions in the air is increased. Why negative ions may be beneficial is only partially understood. It has been shown that negative ions in the air bind with airborne pollutants, making them heavier so that they fall to the ground, and therefore are unavailable to be inhaled. Many modern air purifiers - the so-called 'ionic air cleaners' - use this technique to provide cleaner indoor air for allergy sufferers. Some studies seem to indicate that an increase in negative ions in the air increases blood flow to the brain, which would have the effect of improved concentration. The salt lamp is an attractive alternative to the utilitarian look of an air purifier. The amount of negative ions a salt lamp can release depends on its size and how warm the candle or light bulb can make it. The larger the crystal, obviously, the more expensive the lamp, but the larger area it can provide with negative ions.

4 - Stone Crushing [Apr-2005]

Region: Sindh
Investment Size: PKR Between 1-2 Million

The proposed project envisages the setting up a unit for crushing stone. Stone crushing industry is an important industrial sector in the country engaged in producing crushed stone used as raw material for various construction activities i.e. construction of roads, bridges, buildings and canals. For building and construction purposes, generally Hard Lime Stone is used. Though, low quality Granite could also be used, its excavation is difficult and it is comparatively a high cost option. In addition, it is mostly used for decorative construction for its beauty and shaded colors. The stone crushing units could be seen in the vicinity of almost all major cities and towns of Pakistan. The mined stone is transported to the crusher sites by road (if crusher is located on different point) through tractor trolleys, dumpers or pay-loaders. The dumpers unload the mined stones into storage hoppers located at elevated levels of the crusher sites. These stones are crushed in a Primary Crusher and sent to a vibratory screen. The oversize stones from the screen is sent for further size reduction in secondary and tertiary Crushers. From the secondary and/or tertiary Crushers, the crushed stones are sent for screening. In the screen, products of various sizes get separated which are stored in heaps. Movement of stones from crusher to screen to product piles is done through belt conveyors. The product is generally stored in open areas. The schematic of typical stone crusher units is given on page 13 of this document under the heading of process flow
