Business in LIGHT ENGINEERING sector

Small or medium sized business in Light Engineering sector offers many opportunities in Pakistan. But it is important that those who want to select & pursue such business should have some knowledge, experience and most importantly passion for the light engineering  sector. Otherwise, the probability for failure may be high.

Below are the summarized versions of the pre-feasibility reports by SMEDA on Business in Light Engineering sector for you to get an idea before you download the full version.

1 - Bicycle Parts Manufacturing Unit (Carrier) [Sep-2008]

Region: Punjab
Investment Size: PKR Between 2-5 Million

This pre-feasibility study provides details about bicycle carrier to be manufactured for the standard 22-inch bicycles, mountain bicycles, fancy bicycles and children bicycles. The carrier would be manufactured at superior quality than that currently supplied in the retail trade or for the assembly of bicycles. Nickel plating on the carrier spring and paint on the carrier would be of excellent quality so that it does not peel off.

2 - Fan Guards Manufacturing Unit [Jun-2006]

Region: Punjab
Investment Size: PKR Between 10-20 Million

Fan is a necessity item of summer season. The hot local climate during summer season makes it mandatory to use. Their main usage is to get rid of extensive heat through air displacement at a fast rate. Three major types of fans have the maximum demand, which are Ceiling Fans, Pedestal Fans, and Bracket Fans. All Pedestal and bracket fans have fan guards as an integral part of the product. The reason is to protect the users from any harm that could be caused by fast rotating, sharp edged fan blades. The demand for fans has shown increasing trend over the past few years. Additional demand was generated locally as well as through exports. Another interesting fact is the increase in demand for better quality. People are becoming more quality conscious. In this scenario, the suppliers of spare parts to fan manufacturing units are also under compulsion to improve their quality. This pre-feasibility is being prepared by SMEDA and is intended to provide general information on the opportunity for an investor to set up modern and proper fan guards manufacturing unit in Gujrat, the home of fan manufacturing industry.

3 - Gas Appliances Manufacturing Unit [Jan-2011]

Region: Punjab
Investment Size: PKR Between 10-20 Million

The proposed project entails setting up of a Gas Appliances Manufacturing Unit. The proposed product range includes gas water heaters (geysers), cooking range, gas room heaters and gas stoves. Presently, gas appliances manufactured locally dominate the sales in the local markets, whereas very small quantities are being exported. Imported gas appliances have a small share in the local market, the reason being availability of cheap local gas appliances. The proposed unit is capable of producing quality products, which can be sold in the local market as well as in the foreign market.

4 - Injection Molding Plastic Products [Mar-2005]

Region: Sindh
Investment Size: PKR Between 1-2 Million

Plastic is a common name for Polymers: materials made of long strings of carbon and other elements. Each unit in a string is called a monomer, and is a chemical usually derived from oil. There are many different types of plastic, depending on the starting monomer selected, the length of polymer chains, and the type of modifying compounds added. Each plastic is developed for a special purpose. However the varied use of plastic in our everyday life has made it an integral component in almost everything. Plastic is used in everyday items like ballpoint pen, buckets, cups, glasses, water pipes, plastic bags to items of engineering excellence like cars and airplanes. According to some experts, around 350 kilograms plastic is used in every car manufactured in Germany. With such a high ratio of usage in developed countries, plastic has become a cheap but an important commodity.

5 - Ship Breaking [Dec-2005]

Region: Sindh
Investment Size: PKR Between 1-2 Million

Ship breaking is the process of dismantling an obsolete vessel’s structure for scrapping or disposal. Conducted at a pier, dry dock or dismantling slip, it includes a wide range of activities, from removing all gear and equipment to cutting down and recycling the ship’s infrastructure. Ship breaking is a challenging process, due to the structural complexity of the ships and the many environmental, safety, and health issues involved. The scraping work needs huge labor and capital; scrapping operations involve high risks and problems. So, the owners of the vessels prefer to sell out the unserviceable vessels to the countries where there is demand for scrapped steel and other items of old ships, where labor cost is relatively low and where there is less concern about hazards, toxicity and environmental pollution. Thus, ship owners who want to get rid of their unserviceable vessels contact the concerned business community who look for cheaper steel and other items of the ships. These two parties transact a good business of selling and buying of unserviceable vessels at a point.
